The St Mary’s Motor Show, opened on Sunday 14th September to a great response from the local community who poured through our gates to enjoy a motor show with a little twist this year: we incorporated a mini school fete too. It was a great success. 50 coconuts were knocked off their seats at the Shy and the bobbing ducks were all hooked by eager children.
In some late summer sunshine, the crowds could spend time appreciating the huge range of very nearly 500 exhibitor cars which were classic and club cars, kit cars and the very individually fashioned. All sorts of vehicles were present: fire engines, tractors, vintage coaches, military vehicles and the Jumbulance, which is an specially adapted coach that can take and care for those who need extra medical support when on pilgrimage.
The four winners of the Show were Best in Show, a Darracq from 1903, a beautifully restored French model; A Chevrolet pick-up truck as Best American, a Yamaha Bronze motor bike, and Best Utility was a highly versatile and brightly coloured tractor.
With such a warm day the refreshment tent proved very popular which this year incorporated an indoor seating area to escape the sun for those who have had enough this year. Most popular of all were the home made cream teas – scones with real Cornish clotted cream and jam. The burger stalls were kept busy all day supplying fresh hand=made burgers with all the trimmings coming free for those who wanted fried onions and cheese atop of their creation. Some even slipped in a bacon rasher. Such was the fun nature of the whole day at what we hope people will agree is a friendly community show providing fun for all the family and bringing together local car dealers to wow their potential clients. This year we had a first. Ford unveiled the latest model of the much awaited Ford Mondeo. We were all surprised and delighted to have it at the Show.
Charlie Cage the St Mary’s Motor Show Chairman said: “All the effort that goes into putting the Show on is rewarded by the smiling faces of the happy crowds. Of course we aim to raise money for our school which is hoping to get a new minibus.”
